Cars Like Yours Are Being Stolen |

Morning Resident
When West Midlands Police
(WMP) issues "cars like yours are being stolen" alerts, they recommend a "layered" approach to security. If your vehicle is being specifically targeted, follow this advice to secure it: 1. Secure Your Keys (Prevent Relay Theft) Thieves use relay devices to capture the signal from keyless fobs inside your house to unlock and start your car. Use a Faraday Pouch: Place your fobs (including spares) in a signal-blocking Faraday pouch or box. Check the Bag: Test your Faraday pouch every few months to ensure it still blocks the signal. Key Placement: Keep keys well away from your front door and windows to prevent thieves from "fishing" for them or scanning them. Turn Off Signals: Some fobs allow you to turn off the wireless signal when not in use; check your manual.
2. Add Physical Deterrents Layering physical locks makes your car a much less attractive target than others on the same street. Steering Wheel Lock: WMP recommends Sold Secure tested locks. Disklok types that cover the entire wheel are highly effective visual and physical deterrents. OBD Port Lock: Many modern cars are stolen by thieves plugging into the diagnostic port. Consider fitting a lockable cover to this port. Immobilisers/Trackers: If your car is high-value, consider an aftermarket Thatcham-approved immobiliser or tracker.
3. Check Your Locking Manually Check the Handle: Thieves may use "jammers" to block your fob's signal while you walk away. Always pull the handle to ensure it is actually locked. Watch Wing Mirrors: If your car mirrors fold automatically when locked, always check that they have moved. Thieves look for vehicles with mirrors still out as a sign they are unlocked.
4. Parking and Home Security Well-Lit Areas: Park in well-lit, busy streets or car parks with the Park Mark award. Driveway Lighting: Use motion-activated security lights or CCTV to improve the deterrent at home. Garage Use: If you have a garage, use it. It is the single best way to prevent your vehicle from being scanned or targeted. Thank You
